We know how we’re supposed to talk to our visitors. Focus on what’s brand new and shiny. Steer you to the five things that people tend to come to see. Package our neighborhood in an easily digestible little packet.
But to be honest, this isn’t the typical destination. This is North Shore Collinwood. The joy of visiting here isn’t the packaged experience. It’s the unexpected. The authentic. The quirky. The joy of discovering a neighborhood where hard work and creativity are building a new model of urban living … But not at the expense of forgetting our incredible past.
You should definitely come for the indie music scene, the region’s best locally-sourced food and the happy contemplation of looking out from the shores of Lake Erie.
But the real joy will be in sitting down in an unexpected place and striking up a conversation with the police officer, the welder and the curator next to you. This is the real urban experience. This is North Shore Collinwood.
Ready to escape the neat, little tourism package? We’re here to help.
Collinwood believes in … TRANSFORMING COMMUNITY BLIGHT INTO COMMUNITY BENEFIT
Others saw a failing social hall. Collinwood saw the home of one of the country’s top indie music venues. Others saw an eyesore, vacant big box store. Collinwood saw the site of the city’s most popular – and first LEED certified – recreation center. Others saw vacant brownstones that needed demolition. Collinwood saw the launching pad for the region’s very first renter equity program.
Time and time again, our community has demonstrated that blight doesn’t have to stay blight. With a little imagination and a lot of hard work, we can transform spaces that others might write off entirely into new neighborhood assets – places where residents, workers and visitors can all come together to engage in community-building activities.
And now we’re about to tackle one of our most transformative revitalization projects to date – the redevelopment of the long-vacant LaSalle Theater into the LaSalle Arts and Media Center. It’s a bold, multi-million dollar investment in a distressed but beautiful 1927 architectural gem is going to pay off big. When complete, the facility will house three new storefronts; a high-tech, multi-use community room and theater space; and six of the most unique apartments in all of Cleveland.
We just celebrated our groundbreaking, but it’s certainly not too late to get involved in this exciting project. Click here to learn more.
It’s pretty rare that a community is both off the beaten path and super-easy to reach. But then again, North Shore Collinwood is a pretty rare community. Need a little peace and quiet? Settle in along three miles of beachfront parks, explore nature along Euclid Creek or spread out a blanket at one of the city’s biggest parks. Want a little more urban excitement? Stroll through block after block of historic, turn-of-the-century homes. Need to turn up the volume? Visit one of our bustling main streets, teeming with independent shops, natural landscaping and one of the Midwest’s most daring collections of public art
