    About Us

North Shore Collinwood is a truly epic place. From the United States’ largest vineyard community at the turn of the 20th century to one of the world’s largest industrial rail centers by the 1950s, this is a neighborhood that’s grown up right alongside our country – and played a big role in building that national growth.

It hasn’t always been pretty. Like urban neighborhoods across the globe – and particularly in the Rust Belt region we call home – we’ve had more than our fair share of challenges, struggles and heartbreaks. But underlying all those big changes, we’ve been able to maintain an incredible heritage.

We’ve managed to stay true to our vision of turning this waterfront community into a different kind of place – a place where all people, regardless of background or financial means, have access to incredible quality of life. A place where diversity is prized and protected. A place where everyday people are given the authority and the resources to build a community that lives up to its full potential as a place that people actively choose to live and work in.

Since 1994, Northeast Shores Development Corporation has worked to support and bolster that grassroots vision. Day in and day out, the talented staff and board of our nonprofit step up in big and small ways to make North Shore Collinwood an even better place for everyone to live, work and visit.

We’re here for our community, and we’re here for you. Reach out and let us know how we can support your vision for an even better North Shore Collinwood.

    Our Story

Northeast Shores came into being in 1994, and for more than 20 years now, our small but mighty organization has been working hard to support the vision of North Shore Collinwood residents, workers and supporters.

We’ve brought tens of millions of dollars in investment into making physical improvements here. We’ve helped dozens of independent merchants purchase their own storefront spaces. We’ve moved hundreds of low- and moderate-income households into quality housing options. We’ve made targeted investments into pocket parks, community centers, apartment buildings and huge cultural spaces. And equally importantly, we’ve provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in support to grassroots leaders to make their own space improvements in North Shore Community.

The result has been an increasingly quirky, walkable and creative place where people can see just how a vibrant a community this is, has been and will be in the future.

And it’s all those people – the long-term resident, the brand-new homeowner, the parent that chooses a top-notch North Shore Collinwood school for their child – that are the true force for change in our community. Northeast Shores works tirelessly to support their efforts – funding hundreds of community arts projects; helping convene education providers, merchants and residents; engaging stakeholders in planning activities that are far more than just the typical rubber stamp of approval – planning that gives people real voice in envisioning next steps for their community.

Our organization is incredibly proud of what we and an army of grassroots leaders have been able to accomplish over the past few decades. But now’s not the time to stop. Now’s the time build. Now’s the time to think beyond the tracks of what we’ve gotten done toward what we can do next.

Northeast Shores’ strategic plan is pushing our organization to be even bolder, more imaginative and more aggressive in building out quality of life and economic opportunity with and for our community.

The past few decades might have been amazing ones for North Shore Collinwood. But if we have anything to say about it, the coming years in our neighborhood are going to be even more remarkable.
